What is Ayurveda?

Originating in India, Ayurveda pronounced (Eye- your- vay-da), literally translates to ‘the science of life’. Over time the ancient teachings of this 5,000-year-old comprehensive medical system have been handed down by Indian Sages as a part of their spiritual tradition as the “Mother of All Healing.” And that it is.

Ayurveda encompasses prevention, healing, and longevity as a holistic science. We are made up of Body, Mind, and Consciousness and must strive to find balance in each.

Ayurveda focuses heavily on prevention and encourages the maintenance of health through striving for balance in one’s life, right thinking, diet, lifestyle and the use of herbs, in both diet and topically on your skin.

Many factors will impact our ability to be in a balanced state such as stress, poor diet & environmental factors leading to skin issues. At Ayurveda Traditions, we harness the ancient wisdom and centuries of knowledge to produce a clean, potent, and effective range of hair and body products designed to be gentle on the earth and on your skin.

There are 3 doshas or body humours in Ayurveda.

VATA, PITTA & KAPHA.

All 3 doshas are present in our bodies with varying dominance. While all doshas are present in every cell in our body each has an area of origin. Vata primarily resides in the colon, Pitta in the small intestine, and Kapha in the stomach.

Vata is the subtle energy associated with movement — composed of Space and Ether. It governs breathing, blinking, muscle and tissue movement, pulsation of the heart, and all movements in the cytoplasm and cell membranes. In balance, vata promotes creativity and flexibility. Out of balance, vata produces fear and anxiety.

Pitta presents as the body’s metabolic system — made up of Fire and Water. It governs digestion, absorption, assimilation, nutrition, metabolism and body temperature. In balance, pitta promotes understanding and intelligence. Out of balance, pitta arouses anger, hatred and jealousy.

Kapha is the energy that forms the body’s structure — bones, muscles, tendons — and provides the “glue” that holds the cells together, formed from Earth and Water. Kapha supplies the water for all bodily parts and systems. It lubricates joints, moisturizes the skin, and maintains immunity. In balance, kapha is expressed as love, calmness and forgiveness. Out of balance, it leads to attachment, greed and envy.
